08 FebSecond Baby Shower Things to Know

As everyone knows, preparing for a baby means acquiring a lot of new items – which makes a baby shower almost a necessity. It is also a wonderful way for family and friends to show their love and support. Some people consider it improper to have a second-baby shower, since it was unlikely that mom and dad would need very much, especially the big-ticket items. It is now considered proper to have a second-baby shower, as long as certain modifications are made.

Instead of a full shower, you could host a mini-shower, where guests only bring those necessities that every baby has to have – bath accessories, undershirts, diapers, etc. Another idea is to ask mom and dad to name the items they never received for their first baby, or that need replacing. You can also have a shower where the gifts are for mom, with guests bringing relaxing and useful items for her to enjoy during the last days of her pregnancy and after the baby is born. These items can be both useful and a treat for mom, like extra soft slippers for the long night’s she’ll spend getting in and out of bed.

It’s also a fun idea to have a shower where all the gifts are for mom – but are not related to being a mom, like a flirty nightdress or sexy nail polish (for when she can see her toes again!). The guests might choose to pool together to buy a gift certificate for something extravagant like a day for two at the spa or a fancy dinner – but be sure to include babysitting arrangements. Another useful idea is to sit down with the dad and the mom’s loved ones, and organize a dry-erase calendar with concrete offers of help where it is likely to be needed.

Things you can help out with could include cleaning house so mom can come home from the hospital to washed dishes and folded laundry, scheduling transportation for the older child’s activties, and offering to come along to do errands. The finished calendar, with names and phone numbers in case of adjustments, can be presented to mom at the shower. Sometimes, both the baby and the mom have everything they need already. You can choose to commemorate the upcoming event with a simple party with her friends and family.

You may want to ask the guests to bring baby items for donation to a women’s charitable organization. Another idea for a second-baby shower is to hold a “freezer” party, with guests bringing food that can go in the freezer or else be easily stored. Mom will definitely need and appreciate this help as she approaches her due date and also after the birth. It is important to hold this shower quite close to the due date, of course, and to be sure that the mom has enough freezer or storage space to make it work.

Lastly, it is acceptable to hold a full, as-if-it-were-the-first-baby shower in the case of a “caboose” baby – one who, as the name implies, is being born several years after the last child. Many moms and dads in this situation need to start all over again, as the big items might no longer meet safety guidelines – or may have been donated altogether.

Keep in mind that the main reason you are there, no matter what kind or how many gifts are given, is to celebrate the upcoming birth and show the mom your support.
